In the summer of 2024, a button with a star on it showed up in Telegram, and plenty of people still tap it a little warily. Is it money? Crypto? Loyalty points, like the coffee shop card where your tenth latte is free?

The real answer is more boring than any of the three. Let's go through it step by step, without the crypto jargon.

What are Telegram Stars?

Telegram Stars are Telegram's in-app currency. You buy them with regular money and spend them inside the app: in bots, mini apps and channels. Telegram launched them on June 6, 2024, and since then, anything digital sold in a bot is paid for in Stars. Telegram's rules for developers require it.

Stars aren't cryptocurrency. They don't live on a blockchain, you don't need a wallet to hold them, and their price doesn't swing up and down. They're simply a balance on your account, which you'll find in Settings, under My Stars.

What are Telegram Stars used for?

• Purchases in bots and mini apps. An extra life in a game, access to a course, a subscription to a service: if a bot sells something digital, it will bill you in Stars.
• Paid posts and channel subscriptions. Creators can lock some posts or an entire channel, and access costs Stars.
• Star reactions. Instead of a heart, you can send the author a few Stars. It's the quickest way to say "thanks, keep writing".
• Gifts. You can send a friend a gift from Telegram's catalog, anything from a teddy bear to a cake, and they can show it off on their profile.
• Paid messages. Some people and channels charge for messages: you can only write to them by sending Stars. It works wonders against spam.
• Ads. Channel and bot owners can pay for Telegram ads with Stars, and then the ads come with a 30% discount.

How much do Telegram Stars cost?

There's no single Telegram Stars price: it depends on where you buy.

• In the app on iPhone or Android. The purchase goes through the App Store or Google Play, and their commission, around 30%, is built into the price. It's the most convenient option and the most expensive one.
• Through @PremiumBot. It works in Telegram for desktop, in the web version and in the Android version downloaded from Telegram's website. There's no app store commission, so it usually comes out cheaper.
• On Fragment. This is Telegram's official marketplace, where Stars are sold for the cryptocurrency Gram (called Toncoin until June 2026). It's roughly a third cheaper than in the app, but you'll need a crypto wallet.

How to buy Telegram Stars

The simplest way: open Settings, go to My Stars, pick a package and pay. It costs more, but it takes a minute. You can save money through @PremiumBot or Fragment, covered above.

Search around and you'll also find resellers offering Stars for less. That's a gray area: Telegram's terms don't allow selling Stars from your own balance, and if something goes wrong, nobody will be able to help you. If you decide to try anyway, never give a reseller your login code or your Telegram password: all anyone needs to send you Stars is your username.

Can you get Telegram Stars for free?

Yes, but not the way bots with names like "Free Stars 2026" promise. The honest ways are:

• A gift. A friend can buy you Stars or a gift.
• Converting a gift into Stars. If you'd rather not keep a gift from Telegram's catalog on your profile, you can turn it into Stars.

You can't transfer Stars from your balance to another person. You can buy them as a gift, though: in Telegram itself, through the gift menu on your friend's profile, and on Fragment, by entering the recipient's username.

If the Stars are already on your balance, there's a workaround: spend them on a gift from the catalog. Your friend can convert it into Stars, but they'll get fewer than the gift cost.

How to withdraw Telegram Stars

If you're a regular user, you can't: Stars you've bought can only be spent. Channel and bot owners can withdraw, with some conditions:

• withdrawals go through Fragment and pay out in Gram, which can then be sold on an exchange;
• a Star becomes available for withdrawal 21 days after it arrives;
• the minimum withdrawal is 1,000 Stars;
• a creator gets about $13 for every 1,000 Stars.
